Palo Alto Chili Cook-off and Shoreline Fireworks

Field Trip on Wednesday, 4 July, 2012
With Caroline Lambert
- persons have RSVP - RSVP now!

This is a two-in-one field trip. The first part will be the City of Palo Alto 31st Annual Summer Festival and Chili Cook-off. The second part will be fireworks at Shoreline Lake. We hope you'll come to both.

Chili Cook-off: This is one of Palo Alto's main city-sponsored annual events. It starts at noon at Mitchell Park and goes to 5pm. Chili tasting starts at 1:30pm. Attracting thousands of sun and chili lovers, the festival embraces everything wonderful about summer.More details can be found here. Note: the city is interested in obtaining photos of this event.

Fireworks at Shoreline: The west side of Shoreline Lake is a great place to view the fireworks that follow the concert at the Shoreline Amphitheatre that night. Reflections in the water can be a nice added touch. Coincidentally, a just-past-full moon will rise around 9:15pm, just before the fireworks will start, more or less in line with the amphitheatre as viewed from the west side of the lake.

Special Instructions

Directions and meeting time for Chili Cook-off:

We will not be carpooling to the cook-off since it is local. We will meet at 3:00pm at the sculpture near the restrooms at the circle at the end of the entrance from Meadow Dr, just below the marker in this map. The street address is 600 East Meadow Dr, Palo Alto. Feel free to come sooner to check out the activities.

Directions and meeting time for Fireworks:

Carpooling is encouraged because the west side of Shoreline Lake is a popular place to go on July 4. The fireworks start between 9:30pm and 10:00pm. Those who don't mind going early (we need to establish a viewing location before the crowds arrive) can meet at Pete's at the Charleston shopping center (Charleston and Middlefield) at 7:00pm to carpool. If that's too early for you, you'll need to make your own way to the viewing spot. If you draw a straight line down Terminal Blvd from San Antonio Rd, we'll be approximately where that line intersects the lake. Parking in that area will be tight so be prepared to walk some distance.
