Wildflowers at Russian Ridge, April 2010

There are a number of locations close to home where the wildflowers can be spectacular in spring. Even if this year's bloom is not as spectacular as the image above, there will still be flowers, and certainly other objects of photographic interest. The destination for this trip will be Russian Ridge, a grassy ridge high above Palo Alto with views of both the bay and the ocean. Besides being one of the top five places in the Bay Area to see wildflowers, it is also one of the best places to see raptors. There is a diversity of plant life, including an ancient oak grove, with large, moss-covered oaks. If you've never been there, you're in for a treat. We will do a loop walk of about 2 miles, mostly flat. We can optionally visit Alpine Pond in Skyline Open Space Preserve, across Alpine Rd from Russian Ridge. The weather, of course, could work against us. If it's rainy, we'll cancel. But if it's foggy - that's an opportunity for a different kind of photograph. The oak trees can look magical in the mist. Dew adds another dimension to photographing plants.

Special Instructions

The meeting place is the entrance to Russian Ridge off Alpine Rd. This is just the other side of Skyline Blvd from the intersection with Page Mill Rd.
