Description

Pleas refer to the emails sent to members for instructions on signing up for this trip.

The Official Hotel of the trip is the Embassy Suites by Hilton San Rafael Marin County, 101 McInnis Parkway, San Rafael, CA 94903  see http://embassysuites3.hilton.com/en/hotels/california/embassy-suites-by-hilton-san-rafael-marin-county-SFORFES/index.html .  This was based on the closer hotels not having many rooms available, good accommodations for people to share a room, one can cancel a reservation the day before arrival without penalty (in case of bad weather) and the hotel includes a good breakfast.

An alternative hotel closer to Pt Reyes recommended by member Judy Kramer is the Motel Inverness http://www.motelinverness.com  they may have some rooms available. Note their cancellation policy.  If you book this hotel, please send the field trip chair an email telling him so.

The only costs I anticipate for this trip are carpooling or solo driving costs, tolls, meals you purchase and hotel if you stay overnight.

A large part of great nature photography is being there at the right time.  This trip is designed to be at one of the best times of the year for being in Point Reyes.

Point Reyes National Seashore, a national park, is about 75 miles north of Palo Alto on the coast (about a 2 hr drive from Palo Alto per Google Maps).  Mid March is likely one of the better times of the year to visit for photography.  Right now, many parts of Point Reyes are closed to visitors due to animal breeding, especially elephant seals.  Those closures end on March 15, so this trip takes place on the first weekend without these closures.

This field trip can be just a Saturday or Sunday day trip or a two day trip depending upon your preferences.

During this time the following events in nature’s cycles are taking place:

  1. A peak time for bird migration
  2. Elephant seals breading colony see the chart below
  3. California Whale migration is at a peak in mid to late March with excellent view location.

This is in additional to the usual rich wildlife in Point Reyes
  1. Tule Elk herds
  2. Sea Lions and harbor seals

Elephant Seals
Males, females, juveniles, and/or pups are visible at Point Reyes at various times throughout the year.

Birds
The park's coastal location and its wealth of unspoiled habitats, estuaries, grasslands, coastal scrub and forest all attract many migrating and wintering birds. The projection of the peninsula some 10 miles seaward from the "mainland" makes Point Reyes National Seashore a landing spot for many vagrants—birds that may have made errors in navigation and thus are unexpected in this area.

Hog Island Oyster Farm
I have booked a Noon reservation at their "The Boat Oyster Bar” for lunch.  This is also a great place for photos of a working Oyster Farm.  The Sunday Lunch at the Hog Island Oyster Farm has a menu beyond oysters  see their sample menu at https://hogislandoysters.com/locations/marshall/marshall_boat
