Special Program - Maggie Dethloff
Maggie Dethloff will discuss her role as a curator of photography and new media, the process of exhibition planning, and her approach to assessing photographs as an art historian and curator. With a particular interest in photographic materiality, one of the criteria that Maggie often considers is how a photograph engages with its own condition as a photograph. Since its beginnings, photography as a medium has been prone to technical innovation and, subsequently, redefinition. So, before we ask what defines good photography, we must ask what defines photography itself. Maggie will sketch the history of photography’s development and definition from its advent through the introduction of digital cameras and digital editing applications, along the way asking thought-provoking questions raised by photographic projects that push the boundaries of the field. Maggie is the assistant curator of photography and new media at the Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University.
