Summary of this Field Trip:

When Friday, January 28, 2022 and Saturday February 5, 2022.  Start time of 10:30am

Where  Meetup at North Entrance to Sawyer Camp Trail. Street Parking is free.  No cost to enter.

Length of Field Trip Depending upon your group of members, expect between 2 hours and 4 hours

Physical Effort to expect The trail is paved. For the few people who will go the full distance, round-trip, the hike is 5 miles.  I expect most people will hike 2 to 4 miles.  There are no steep sections, most of the trail is a gentle moderate incline.  If you did the full 5-mile hike, the max elevation change would be about 300 feet.

Format Due to public health issues and how trips like this work best socially, I recommend forming group of 2 to 6 people.

Registration  Required, so members can see who is going and form small groups to tour the trail by contacting each other directly

What to see  Sawyer Camp Tail was part of the stagecoach route to go from San Francisco to Half Moon Bay in the mid to late 1800s.  While the trail is near Hwy 280, when on the trail, there in no perception that you are near an urban area.

It has lush old growth forest, many covered by interesting mosses, lichen and fungi.  These are also old growth trees that take many unusual and unexpected shapes.   There are many tree tunnels with the occasional biker or jogger to photograph.  There is also the San Andreas Lake. Local fauna include wild turkeys, hawks and small birds, and deer.

Don't expect to see many wild flowers.

What to bring  While the trail is paved, there can be sections where the surface has slippery mud, so wear footwear with a good tread and avoid flat soles.  Rain or a fine mist can be a possibility, so dress accordingly.

Carpools  PACC is not organizing carpools, but you can do this on your own.  Due to public health issues, it may be best to have your carpool and hiking group be limited to people you already are in contact.
