Images by Allyson Ely Selected by Praxis Gallery

Fallen Angel (Cloth Embedded in Mud) and An Uncommon Beauty, images by PACC member Allyson Ely, have been selected for inclusion in The Found Object Exhibition at the Praxis Gallery and Photo Arts Center in Minneapolis.

For this exhibition, Praxis solicited photographic art that explores the subject of the “found object” as pure visual form, detached from its history or utility, or conversely, the representation of the object as a catalyst for exploring broader issues such as subjectivity and socialization, memory and loss, or love and death.  The juror was W. Scott Olsen, writer, photographer, and professor of English at Concordia College.  The exhibition will be on the walls July 20 through August 17.  The opening reception will take place on Saturday, July 20, 6 to 8 PM.  The temporary gallery may be seen at https://www.praxisphotocenter.org/temp-gallery-3-2mb3.

Allyson says:

– Fallen Angel (Cloth Embedded in Mud):

In front of a small church near the Louvre, I discovered a garment embedded in dried mud.  It was an unusual sight: the surrounding mud was  uncharacteristically white, almost luminous; the cloth itself was coarse, but so delicately colored and folded that it was transformed into something lovely and ethereal. Here laya fallen angel. Or, perhaps the miracle was a smaller one: the time of day, the angle of light.

– An Uncommon Beauty, from the series of the same name:

I continue to be intrigued by the vast, dark spaces and commanding pieces of machinery in these cement silos.  During an early visit, I saw a small compressor, recessed in a dark corner and illuminated by a bright halo of light.  The subtle shadows cast on the floor and brilliant highlights created  an arresting image.  While insignificant in size compared to others, this compressor had a presence and personality of its own.  Although there are better images in my portfolio, this remains my favorite.
