PACC member Chris Stevens-Yu is one of eight photographers selected by Shadow & Light Magazine to publish a portfolio of ten images in its July/August 2024 issue, The Horse. The issue also included several mini-portfolios and single images by other photographers. The jurors were Helen K. Garber, a fine art photographer and mixed media artist, and Tony Bonanno, a professional photographer and instructor at the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops. The call for entry was simple – nothing but horses!
Chris says:
Photographing the horses of the Camargue in southwest France had been a dream of mine ever since I was a student in the nearby city of Montpellier. Almost 30 years later, I got the chance to fulfill that dream; and over my 50th birthday no less! There is something so pure about these white-appearing horses, which are actually gray, who are native to southern France and are one of the oldest breeds of horses in existence.
Chris Stevens-Yu:
Once Upon a Time
Most people have seen images of these horses as they gallop together through the wetlands of the area. I went with the express goal of making images that were unique and captured the essence of the horses and their environment. I incorporated a variety of styles given the variety of settings they inhabit. My personal favorites are ones with motion blur, which relay the sense of their movement. My favorite image overall was one in which a guardian (the caretakers of the horses) is framed by the blurred horses in motion. Two surprises of the trip were the chance to see and photograph a beautiful black stallion (I also included an image of him shaking the sand off of his coat) and the double rainbow that appeared at the end of our last evening in the Camargue. Can’t beat that!
