Image by Wright Schickli Selected by Praxis Gallery

Merchant’s Ice Tower, an image by PACC member Wright Schickli, was selected for inclusion in The Abandoned Places, Empty Spaces Exhibition at the Praxis Gallery and Photo Arts Center in Minneapolis. Through visual representation of abandoned spaces, artifacts of history are at once new but decayed, ancient yet fresh. The past takes on new life in these forsaken, ruined, or empty spacesPraxis Gallery sought photographic art that explores the visual and social significance of what is left behind, in which crumbling factories, derelict churches, private homes, and other empty places serve as the basis for creative investigation. Robi Chakraborty, a former commercial and press photographer who now prefers to photograph people in the cities and villages of his native India, was the juror. The exhibition will run from November 16 through December 14. The opening reception will take place on Saturday, November 16, 6 to 8 PM. The temporary gallery may be seen at https://www.praxisphotocenter.org/copy-of-4-temp-gallery.

Wright says: I photographed this place in Louisville, Kentucky, in 2023; it’s a location I go back to every time I’m there, because the area is always changing. These structures are only 2-3 blocks from the major downtown street in Louisville and are just a throwback in time. They have not yet been torn down for urban renewal, although some accompanying structures are now a Brew Pub. I captured this image with my Leica M11 monochrome camera using a 50mm F2 lens at 1/320 second and 64 ISO.
