Images by Phil Lewenthal Selected by PhotoPlace Gallery & SE Center

Images by PACC member Phil Lewenthal were selected for exhibitions at PhotoPlace Gallery in Middlebury, Vermont, and at the Southeast Center for Photography in Greenville, SC.

Phil’s image, Age, was selected for the exhibition gallery portion of PhotoPlace’s Fall 2024 Landscape Exhibition. PhotoPlace solicited landscapes of all genres – traditional or contemporary; natural, urban, industrial, or abstract. The juror was Ann Jastrab, Executive Director at the Center for Photographic Art in Carmel. She found it nearly impossible to choose only 35 images for the in-house exhibition from the more than 2000 submissions. She selected an additional 39 images for the online-only gallery.

The exhibition will take place November 8 through November 29.  You can view all the images at:  https://photoplacegallery.com/online-juried-shows/landscape-2024/gallery/exhibition-gallery.

Phil says:  The photo was taken last December on the bluff at Bodega Head. This rock has fascinated me for several years, and I've photographed it many times. Its appearance changes dramatically with the light and the angle of the sun. In this case, the light seemed to me particularly to emphasize the wear of centuries.

PhotoPlace Gallery, located in the oldest remaining residence in Middlebury, offers monthly juried exhibitions to photographers worldwide, each with a new topic and an internationally recognized juror. All images selected for the Exhibition Gallery will hang in the physical gallery for the duration of the exhibit; and those selected for the Online Gallery will be viewable in the gallery by continuous-loop projection. Images from both galleries remain permanently on the website, are reproduced in the exhibition catalog, and are promoted on social media.

Phil’s moody image, Prehistory, was selected for the Landscape Online Exhibition at the Southeast Center for Photography. The SE Center sought images of the landscape, whether grand vistas or more personal, intimate treatments – photographs that make a statement, pull us in, make us want to explore. Brian Matiash, professional photographer based in Portland, OR, who specializes in landscape and travel photography, was the juror.

The exhibition runs throughout the month of November. Images may be seen at:  https://www.sec4p.com/landscape-24-online-exhibition.

Phil says:  The photo was taken in September of last year at Sea Ranch. I had gone down to the bluff in the late afternoon and was looking to photograph a different spot when I noticed the heron standing on a rock to my left. I was lucky that he turned to face the left just as waves curled in the background.

Prehistory was awarded First Place in the Amateur Landscapes category of the 2023 Monochrome Photography Awards, as well as Second Place in the Fauna Category of PACC’s October 2023 print competition.

The SE Center for Photography provides local, national, and international photographers of all skill levels the opportunity to have their work presented and enjoyed by collectors, curators, enthusiasts, and colleagues.  The SE Center recently closed its physical location in downtown Greenville; however, the juried shows will exist virtually in a gallery setting that will allow the viewer to walk about and explore.
