Lisa says: This image is part of a series, “Closer to Home,” composed of images of botanicals I made in 2020 during the first eight months of the Covid lockdown. Taking long walks in my neighborhood, I began to see things I’d never noticed before, especially the amazing abundance and variety of flora that flourishes in our temperate climate; many of these plants seemed to have metaphorical resonance for what we were experiencing. I came upon this plant in a rock garden in front of a home across from the Palace of Fine Arts and it reminded me of the spike protein of the corona virus which seemed to have come out of nowhere, hence the title of the image.
