Recognition for Allyson Ely’s Portfolio, A Place Out of Time

A Place Out of Time (previously titled An Uncommon Beauty), a portfolio comprising Allyson Ely’s compelling images showing the interior of cement silos in Northern California, has been selected as one of nine finalists for Soho Photo Gallery’s International Portfolio Competition 2025. Soho Photo Gallery solicited submissions of ten to fifteen compositionally and technically strong images with a consistent theme or topic. The finalists’ portfolios were selected based on digital images submitted by more than 1000 photographers. Jurors were members of Soho Photo Gallery’s Portfolio Review Committee.
A Place Out of Time has also been selected for a Merit Award in Black & White Magazine’s 2025 Portfolio Contest. Selected images will be published in the August issue, No. 173.
Allyson says:
I am honored to be chosen as a finalist in SoHo Photo Gallery’s 2025 International Portfolio Competition. While I continue my work inside of those magnificent cement silos, adding new imagesevery several months, it is the older work that I submitted to this competition.
I love Black & White magazine and have been a subscriber for several years, so
having my work chosen for publication in this inspiring magazine is especially gratifying.
I appreciate the time that Club members have spent critiquing my portfolio in our small groups. I’ve learned a great deal from your many, excellent suggestions, and feel that my work is stronger because of the help and advice that I’ve received. Thank you all!

Soho Photo Gallery was founded in 1971 by a group of New York Times photographers who believed that there was a need in the photographic community for a cooperative gallery where serious photographers could exhibit their personal work, exchange ideas, and learn and grow as artists.
Black & White Magazine, dating back to 1999, is a bi-monthly print magazine for lovers and collectors of black and white fine-art photography. B & W Magazine has been a factor in the increasing popularity of black and white photography, once considered a medium of the past.
