Images by Wright Schickli and Phil Lewenthal were selected for inclusion in the open theme | unleashed exhibition at the A Smith Gallery in Johnson City, Texas. Photographers were invited to submit work to this open-themed call for entry that reflected the theme along the lines of “open-theme | unleashed : release, unbridled, untie, loose, unchain, unloose, discharge, let go of ….…” Darren Ching, art consultant, educator and co-owner of the online Klompching Gallery, was the juror. The exhibition will run from August 29 through October 9. The exhibition may be seen online at https://asmithgallery.com/exhibitions/open-theme-unleashed/. There will be an online reception / YouTube video on Saturday, September 27, at 3 pm CDT -- check A Smith’s blog on the website for availability.
Wright says: I captured Pondering My Future a half-block from my house as this young girl and her nearby mom were walking down the side of the Matadero Creek Causeway in midtown Palo Alto. The whole scene was very eerie as nobody is supposed to walk there, and I tried to capture the essence and mysteriousness of it. I’ve always liked this photo.

Pondering My Future
Phil says: For the last few months I've been experimenting with a new "untethered" approach, which is to take long exposure images handheld in an urban environment. It's not really ICM since I don't intentionally move the camera. But since they are half second exposures, there is always some movement. The results are virtually unpredictable, as was the case here.

Pondering My Future (Wright) and Ghosts (Phil) were two of 27 images from the exhibition that made the greatest impression on Gallery Directors Amanda Smith and Kevin Tully. It will be included in A Smith Gallery’s limited edition hardbound fine art book for the open |unleashed exhibition.
A Smith Gallery was established in 2010 by Amanda Smith. Its mission is to promote the photographic arts through exhibitions, workshops, and facilitation of an active vibrant community of photographers.
