Grazing, an image by Andrew Chasin, was selected for inclusion in the Grain in the Frame Exhibition at Frame 1A Gallery in Alameda. This open-theme exhibition celebrates the vitality of film-based photographic practice, which is reflected in the reference to “grain” in its title. Sharonda Grant and Jeff Heyman, co-owners of Frame 1A, were the jurors. The exhibition will run from February 7 through February 28; and the opening reception will take place on Saturday, February 7.
Grazing was photographed at a farm in Almaden Valley. Andrew says: I chose to use a Holga medium-format film camera to create a timeless, meditative, almost dream-like quality. Although the camera can be challenging to work with – given its single shutter speed, two aperture settings, and imprecise zone focusing – the plastic lens can produce striking results when paired with the right film stock. I developed the film and produced the silver gelatin print submitted for the exhibition in my home darkroom.

Frame 1A Gallery, which just opened in July, is a home for image-makers, observers, and explorers of light. Equal parts art space and photo club, it celebrates the quiet beauty of the frame – and those who step behind it. The co-owners, Sharonda Grant and Jeff Heyman, are Bay Area photographers who met as exhibiting artists at The de Young Open.
