Recoleta #2, an image by Wright Schickli, was selected for inclusion in the On-Line Annex portion of the Camera Work: Black and White group photo show. Black and white photography has an important tradition of luminous, well-crafted, and thoughtfully-composed imagery. Contemporary photographers were invited to submit images in this tradition, but with their own modern voice, visions, and aesthetics. The juror was Todd Johnson, founder and director of Black Box Gallery. Twenty-six images were selected for the Exhibition Gallery, and an additional 50 images were selected for inclusion in the On-Line Gallery Annex. The exhibition will run from December 1 through December 25; and the reception will take place on Saturday, December 6 from 3 to 5 PM. The exhibition is not yet online.
Wright says: I captured this photograph on my fourth and last visit to La Recoleta Cemetery in Buenos Aires during my trip earlier this year. I was perched on a mausoleum across the narrow street with my 21mm lens, hanging on with one hand, trying to catch the glory of this life-sized statue (and its shadow) atop a mausoleum of Julieta Candelaria Estévez, a young woman who was a champion roller skater and who died two days before her twentieth birthday. The statue, a sculpture by artist Jorge Luis Bianchi, was inaugurated in April 2024.
Members in the News says: We wish we had seen Wright capturing this image.
