Images by Wright Schickli and Allyson Ely Selected by Praxis Gallery

Images by Wright Schickli and Allyson Ely were selected for inclusion in the Landscapes Exhibition at the Praxis Gallery and Photo Arts Center in Minneapolis. Praxis sought photographic artwork that offers a broad, interpretive, and personal investigation of the landscape—understood as a physical environment, an imagined terrain, or a conceptual space. The curator for the exhibition was Aline Smithson, a Los Angeles-based visual artist, editor, and educator. The exhibition runs from January 17 through February 14; and the opening reception will take place on Saturday, January 17. You can view the exhibition in the temporary online gallery, here: https://www.praxisphotocenter.org/temp-gallery-4.

Wright says:  Upstream is a photo I captured from my favorite “zen spot” that is adjacent to our cabin near South Lake Tahoe. It’s Glen Alpine Creek draining from the Desolation Wilderness area into Fallen Leaf Lake. I see different things every time I go there.

Allyson says, about The Fallen Branches:  Several years ago, I discovered Mallard Lake in Golden Gate Park. I go there often to walk, admire the colors in the Spring and Autumn, the reflections in the water, and to photograph. Often, there are branches floating in the water but these, seen after a storm, were different:  white, almost glowing against the foliage behind, and striking in their intricate conformation. These branches are long gone, and the magic of this lake is disappearing slowly as algae dims reflections, overgrown brush and bamboo block views, and mallards are only occasional visitors. I continue to return, though, always hoping for a rebirth of this serene and pretty spot.
