Images by Allyson ElyNadine Levin, and Chris Stevens-Yu are included in Gray Loft Gallery’s 8th annual juried color-themed photography exhibit, Orange Crush. Gray Loft invited photographers to bring fresh, distinctive perspectives to the color orange. Jurors for were Ann Jastrab, Executive Director of the Center for Photographic Art in Carmel, and Jan Watten, founder of Gray Loft Gallery. The exhibition runs from March 14 through May 9. The opening reception took place on March 14; and the closing reception will take place on Saturday, May 9, from 4 to 7 pm. In addition, there is… what else… a Tessier Winery Orange Wine Tasting on Saturday, April 19, from 3 to 5 pm. Not all of the images in the exhibition are on Gray Loft’s webpage, so you will have to go to the gallery to see the rest.

Allyson’s image is from her portfolio, The Pier ProjectSituated along the historic San Francisco waterfront on San Francisco Port Authority property, a dilapidated former shipbuilding complex from the late 19th and early 20th centuries has been revitalized as part of a massive adaptive reuse project. ThePier 70 complex was the location of Union Iron Works, a premier West Coast shipbuilding facility through World Wars I and II until it was shuttered several decades ago. This image shows one of the few remaining architectural components of the historic original building that have been preserved.

Nadine’s image, The Old Glass Remembers the Fallen Moon, is a multiple exposure image made through a turn-of-the-20th-century window glass, which explains the wavy/seeded feel in the image. The orange disk was shot from another piece of art and placed in the image in-camera.

The year 2020 set a record for wildfires in California. The Day the Sky Turned Orange is an image that Chris made on September 9 of that year. He wanted to document the impact of the horrendous fires that summer. That day when all turned orange, he went to the Baylands of Palo Alto. He said, “It was a sight to watch these single-engine planes fly above in the smoke-choked air. The boardwalk provided a foreground of interest.”

Gray Loft Gallery is on the 3rd floor of one of Oakland’s oldest artists’ work/live warehouses in the vibrant artist district, Jingletown. It was founded in 2012 when an airy loft was converted to a gallery space. Its mission is to provide exhibition opportunities for artists in a setting that is an alternative to the traditional gallery model. Gray Loft aims to inspire, engage, celebrate, and acknowledge the achievements of artists at every level in a non-traditional art space. Gray Loft now has a second gallery, Gray Loft Uptown, at The Orchard / Galleries on 25 in Oakland.

Gray Loft Gallery is one of more than forty venues participating in Photo Carmel 2026, a celebration of photography on the Central Coast, from Oakland and San Francisco to Carmel Valley, roughly from March 27 through May 10.
