Images by Marcia Lepler, Jim Colton, and Wright Schickli were selected for inclusion in the On-Line Annex portion of the Camera Work: Shadow and Light group photo show at Black Box Gallery in Portland. Shadows enhance relationships among subjects in an image; they provide definition and dimension that complement the quality of the light values. Black Box Gallery solicited images by contemporary photographers that display a range of interpretations of shadow and light. The juror was Todd Johnson, founder and director of Black Box Gallery. Twenty-six images were selected for the Exhibition Gallery; and an additional 50 images were selected for inclusion in the On-Line Gallery Annex. The exhibition runs from June 1 through June 25; and the reception will take place on Saturday, June 6. Images in the exhibition may be viewed online at https://blackboxgallery.com/Camera Work-Shadow and Light-2026-EP.html.
Marcia’s image is Coptic Priest in the Old City of Jerusalem. She says: I took this picture in the Old City of Jerusalem, sacred to three of the major religions – Christianity, Judaism and Islam. As I walked down its cobblestone alleys, I was captivated by how the sunlight created patterns of light and dark and how it illuminated the face of the Priest walking toward it.

About Morning Has Broken, Jim says: I took this photo in Cape Cod when we were staying in an upstairs bedroom at a friend's house. When I woke up in the morning, I saw how interestingly the sunlight played on the inside of the dormer. The range of tones and contrast naturally lent itself to a black and white rendition.

Wright says: I captured Barn at the Empire State Ranch south of Tucson earlier this year. It’s an off-the-beaten-track place to go to see what life was like on a ranch 100 years ago. It is close to the Hummingbird Sanctuary in Patagonia, Arizona, near the border (also very cool to visit if you are a birder).
