Karen Friedmann and Chris Stevens-Yu are two of the eight participants in Los Angeles Center of Photography’s project, Timeline: A Record of the Moment.
LACP describes the project:
Timeline is a real-time exploration of our changing world through the photographic lens—a living, evolving archive built by documentarians, photojournalists, and street photographers capturing what is happening right now in the places they call home, documenting a nation in flux and creating a visual record for next generations.
The exhibition coincides with USA’s 250th anniversary, a moment of global and domestic political, social and collective instabilities and uncertainties. Timeline invited participants to contribute to a growing national archive and an exhibition of select and curated images that will focus on their immediate surroundings and their transmutations.
In its first year, Timeline is taking place in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Photographers came together for 8 months, to explore their worlds photographically, receive mentorship, connect with peers, and create long-form projects. Ed Kashi, photojournalist, filmmaker, speaker, and educator, was the mentor for the San Francisco-based artists; and Ibarionex Perello, photographer, writer, educator, and host of The Candid Frame podcast, was the mentor for the LA-based artists.
The incubation and mentorship period for participants lasted from January through August, 2026. The exhibition will run from August 28 through October 24; and the opening reception will take place on Saturday, August 29, from 3 pm to 5 pm.
About her project, Pets and Their Peeps, Karen says: I invite viewers to reflect on the profound role animals play in our lives and the lasting connections built together. These photographs celebrate the love, joy, comfort, and companionship that emerge when humans and animals share their lives—and remind us that these relationships often shape us as deeply as any human bond.

Chris’s project is unofficially titled Welcome to the Gayborhood. He says: To gain a historical perspective of the Castro district, I immersed myself in the archives of the GLBT Historical Society. I discovered the work of photographers Crawford Barton and Jean-Baptiste Carhaix, who documented life in the Castro from the 1960s through the 1980s. I walked the streets of the Castro several times each week and began pairing my photographs with theirs.

This triptych shows how Chris paired an archival image with his own. The middle image was made by Crawford Barton (1943-1993) and is used with permission from the GLBT Historical Society. The two side images are street portraits that Chris did using a Mamiya medium format film camera given to him by PACC member Stan Chism.
