Images by Brandon Stauffer, Ken Fowkes, and Phil Lewenthal Selected by the Praxis Gallery

Images by PACC members Brandon Stauffer, Ken Fowkes, and Phil Lewenthal were selected for inclusion in the Motion > Blur exhibition at the Praxis Gallery and Photographic Arts Center in Minneapolis.

In this exhibition, Praxis Gallery presents photographic art that demonstrates the fundamental qualities that make motion and blur compelling elements of contemporary photography. The exhibition was curated by Praxis directors.

Brandon Stauffer: Strands

I madeStrands in my backyard using natural light. The subject was a small sculpture that I built out of a copper-plated aluminum sheet and aluminum flashing. I used a long exposure and random camera movements to create the dynamic, abstract effect. I took hundreds of images, but only a few stood out as keepers. I particularly enjoy the aleatory aspect of the process. You never know exactly what you’re going to get.

Ken Fowkes: Transparent Attraction

Transparent Attraction is from a series of photographs constructed using the bare branches of a corkscrew willow tree, dangling in filtered winter sunlight in front of a shaded wall. For years, I enjoyed using long exposure and camera movements that 'brushed' images of the twisty branches across my camera's sensor to construct a large number of abstract light paintings, from which I selected a few keepers. Except for that act of selection, this process was highly uncontrolled; I found it surprisingly satisfying to discover instances of order within the resulting chaos. The image is a negative, so the bright light has become like dark ink.

This image was awarded First Place in the Creative category of PACC’s 2017 Annual Digital Competition.

Transparent Attraction

Phil Lewenthal: Resilience

Resilience is from January, 2022, and was taken at Sea Ranch on an overcast day. It is an attempt to slow down the movement of water over the coastal rocks and sea palm plants that are common in the area. I've developed a great respect for these tiny plants as I've seen them bounce back after being repeatedly pounded by the surf, and they have become a symbol of the resilience that we have needed to endure the trials of the pandemic. As many of you know, I've been taking long exposure images of the water and rocks on the Sonoma coast for several years now and particularly like overcast weather and fog. This was a .6 second exposure.

The in-gallery exhibition will be on the walls February 19 through March 5. The opening reception will take place on Saturday, February 19, from 6 to 8 pm. Praxis Gallery and Photographic Arts Center is a non-profit community-based arts organization that aims to support the development of emerging photographic artists. Praxis provides photographic exhibitions and learning opportunities that inform, challenge, and engage the individual artist, and promotes artists’ work to local and international audiences.
