Images by PACC member Allyson Ely were selected for inclusion in exhibitions this spring and summer at PhotoPlace Gallery in Middlebury, Vermont.
Allyson’s image, Shadow, Unknown Building, was included in The Magic of Light Online Exhibition in March. The call for entry solicited images whose success rests in the quality of the light – harsh or diffuse, bright or dim, natural or artificial, their subjects made magic by the light that falls on them. The juror, Ann Jastrab, is a fine art photographer and the Executive Director of the Center for Photographic Art in Carmel.
Allyson says: My image was taken at the Islais Creek terminal and is part of a current project documenting abandoned, historic buildings along San Francisco’s southern waterfront. Soaring grain silos, rusted conveyor belts, loading arms that once pumped grain into ships, and rail and truck discharge areas haven't been used for 70 years. There is a palpable sense of history and loss that I feel when shooting here, and which I try to convey in my work.

Allyson’s second image, Reflection: Tree and Koi, was included in the Trees Online Exhibition in July and August. The objective of this exhibition was to celebrate the existence and beauty of trees of all sizes and shapes and in all environments and seasons. Wendi Schneider, a Denver-based artist/photographer and art collector, was the juror.
About this image, Allyson says: I began photographing in the Fall of 2019, and my first long-term project was of the Japanese Tea Garden in San Francisco. I had walked there often and long admired its beauty, so it was a fitting place to begin. I loved watching the koi, and was attracted especially by the patterns cast on the water by surrounding trees. I saw this image late in the day, just as I was leaving: serendipity.
