Images by PACC members Allyson Ely, Phil Lewenthal, Elaine Heron, and Ken Fowkes were selected for inclusion in three exhibitions at the PhotoPlace Gallery in Middlebury, Vermont.
– Animalia:
Three images by Ken were included in the Animalia exhibition: one in the Exhibition Gallery and two in the Online Gallery. Animalia ran from May 4 through June 2. The call for entry sought images that reveal the essence of a member of the animal kingdom: its intrinsic nature, its motion, its vulnerability, its power, or the way it relates to humans. The juror was Traer Scott, a photographer who specializes in animal photography, the human/animal bond, and conservation-themed fine art photography.
Ken says about Casey Crossing the Gate, the image that was selected for the Gallery Exhibition: Itwas taken on a sunny winter morning after a nighttime storm. The sun had warmed the rain-soaked wood of this garden gate, creating a wonderful display of rising mist as a backdrop for my backlit yard cat. Check out his snail and his, uh… bug, in the Online Gallery, too!
– Quiet Landscapes:
Phil says: Quiet Mood 3 was taken at Salt Point in May, 2022. One of the things I especially like about taking long exposure images (this one was 30 seconds) is that I never know what they will look like. In this case, time calmed and simplified the turbulent ocean in a way that I hoped for but could not predict. Sometimes thephotogods smile.
– Capturing the Light:
Allyson’s image, Ladder, 2022, was selected for the Online Gallery: She says: This was taken inside a working cement storage silo. I’m captivated by this quiet world of shadows, dim light, unfamiliar machinery, and discarded equipment. The juxtaposition of the productive with the abandoned gives this place an otherworldly feeling.
Phil’s image, The Ancients, will appear in the Exhibition Gallery. He says: I stopped by Bodega Head early one morning on my way to Santa Rosa as the sun was coming up in the south and was treated to a great display of shadows and light on the rocks below. These two reminded me of some kind of ancient fortress. The long exposure combined with the white surf revealed shadows that I don't normally see on water. Of course, the sea palms are always a gift. Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good.
PhotoPlace Gallery, located in the oldest remaining residence in Middlebury, offers monthly juried exhibitions to photographers worldwide, each with a new topic and an internationally recognized juror. All images selected for the Exhibition Gallery will hang in the physical gallery for the duration of the exhibit, while those selected for the Online Gallery will be viewable in the gallery by continuous-loop projection. All images from both galleries remain permanently on the website, are reproduced in the exhibit catalog, and are promoted on social media.
