Two images by PACC member Wright Schickli were accepted by the Maryland Federation of Art (MFA) in Annapolis for its 6th annual Light and Shadow online-only exhibition.  The MFA solicited original 2D or 3D artwork in any medium that plays with the dynamic of “where there’s light, there must be shadow. Whether an artist knows it or not, light and shadow are essential to all forms of art, either as the subject of the piece, or the material being used to create it.”  Thirty of the 54 entries accepted for the Light and Shadow exhibition were photographs.  The exhibition will run from December 15 through January 31.  Awards will be announced on January 8 at 5 pm.  The juror was Jon-Phillip Sheridan, chair of the department of Photography and Film at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Wright says:  

Hilltop View is an infrared photograph I captured at Foothills Park on a bright afternoon a couple years ago using an 850 infrared filter and my Nikon D750 that was converted to a full-spectrum infrared camera by Kolari Vision.  For me, a dedicated infrared camera can bring alive what might otherwise be a boring landscape.

I captured After Hours on my second venture back to this scene after I picked up some Chef Chu take-out.  It’s the old Lozano’s car wash that continues to entrance me at the Wright time of day when nobody is looking and might chase me away.  I used my B&W Leica and I think that naturally enhanced the tonality.

Hilltop View was awarded Honorable Mention by Lisa Stone in the Natural Landscape category of PACC’s July, 2023, Digital Competition, as well as the Director’s Choice Award in Chateau Gallery’s “Scapes” Competition in December, 2022.  After Hours was awarded Second Place by Kimberly Olker in the Monochrome category of PACC’s May, 2023, Digital Competition.

The MFA creates connections in the community by hosting professional avenues of exhibition for local, national, and international artists.  Whether at MFA’s iconic location, Circle Gallery in Downtown Annapolis, or at alternate sites including local restaurants, public buildings, and in partnership with other nonprofits and institutions, the public is able to enjoy and learn from artists at all stages of their careers who are expanding community consciousness through their work.
