Enigma Variation No. 2, an image by PACC member Allyson Ely, was selected by the Southeast Center for Photography in Greenville, SC, for inclusion in its in-gallery Abstract Image ‘24 Exhibition: The SE Center solicited non-representational imagery – images that do not attempt to represent external reality, but seek to achieve its effect using shapes, forms, colors, and texture. The jurors were Mia Dalglish and Lisa Woodward, co-curators at Pictura Gallery in Bloomington, Indiana. The exhibition runs from April 5 through April 27; and the opening reception is April 5, 6 to 8 pm.
Allyson says: This image is part of a series of abstractions created by reflections, achieved by shooting through glass windows when the sun is bright. The resulting image is the effect of light reflected off multiple surfaces within the space. When I’m reviewing the images after a shoot, there is often an unexpected surprise: the reflection of a pedestrian walking behind me, in this instance. Several people have asked why I call the series The Enigma Variations. A photograph taken in this way is often an enigma, which reminds me of British composer Richard Elgar’s orchestral piece, the Enigma Variations. Elgar composed 14 variations. So far, I only have 4.
We’re looking forward to seeing Allyson’s next 10 variations – no pressure!
