Images by Chris Stevens-Yu Included in Joint Exhibition

Images from PACC member Chris Stevens-Yu’s City Angels series will be shown in Memento Mori | Memento Vivere, a joint exhibition by the Bay Area Photographers Collective (BAPC, of which Chris is a member) and Samurai Foto, a photo collective based in Yokohama, Japan.

The exhibition will take place March 9 through April 21 at Marin Art and Garden Center in Ross and includes over 100 artworks from 33 artists from the US and Japan. Primarily photography, the show also includes sculpture, installation, video and ikebana.

Trisha Lagoso Goldberg, noted Bay Area curator and artist, organized the exhibition as an exploration of the cycle of life -

The artworks in Memento Mori | Memento Vivere (remember that you must die | remember that you must live) reflect the full cycle of life and are as varied and complex as the natural world around us. The exhibition is designed to highlight the intrinsic way of things—from fragile beginnings, to the peaks and valleys of mid-life, to late-life decline that may be tragic and magical in equal measures.

Everyone is invited to join Chris at the Opening Reception on Sunday, March 10, from 1:30 to 3:30 pm, where you’ll get to meet many of the exhibiting artists, including six from Japan, as well as the curator. The association of American and Japanese artistic sensibilities within the exhibition is sure to be rich with nuance and contrast. A special feature at 1-1:30 pm will be a live demonstration of ikebana, the ancient art of flower arranging, by visiting Japanese artist KoushiIshizuka. Later in the show, there will be “Meet the Artists” events as well – see below.

Chris says about his City Angels series:
The intersection of the natural and urban worlds has always fascinated me. My work highlights the beauty and strength of birds as they move within human-made environments. The perseverance of “city angels” against the face of the imposing concrete or metal structures of urban sprawl reminds us of the delicate balance between innovation and preservation.

The Bay Area Photographers Collective was formed in 1999 and is grounded in the belief that there is a need for an institution devoted to the development of a photographic community and its concerns. The Collective provides a home base for Bay Area photographers devoted to their art. The Collective promotes and encourages independence, experimentation, cooperation, and creativity. It sustains a community of photographic artists through support, spiritual sustenance, encouragement, and constructive critique. It pursues the exhibition of members’ work on a professional level.
