Special Presentation: Victoria Heilweil

Creating a Photographic Series
A photographic series goes beyond thinking about the single, successful image, and develops content and stories through the relationship between multiple images.  This workshop will discuss why photographers choose to work in series, and how they create them.  What are the steps in formulating, developing and completing a photographic series?  In this workshop, Victoria Mara Heilweil will discuss her inspirations and development as a photographic artist.  Victoria will share examples from her artwork to illustrate how she created various series of her work, and how she decided on the final form for the photographs.  Also included in the workshop will be a discussion of what makes an image successful, and how Victoria edits a photograph to bring out its potential.

Victoria Mara Heilweil is a feminist, lens-based artist and curator. She creates archives of the everyday to highlight and value ordinary human experience. Her artwork has been exhibited nationally, including the de Young Museum, San Jose Institute for Contemporary Art, Robert V. Fullerton Art Museum, University Art Gallery at California State Chico, and the Minneapolis Photo Center. Her photographs are included in collections at Cornell University, Center for Photography at Woodstock and CMPC/Sutter Health Van Ness Hospital in San Francisco. Heilweil holds a Masters of Fine Arts from California College of the Arts, and has been photographing for 38 years.
