In our third member presentation of 2024, Richard Rhudy (Birds), Deborah Plumley (Flowers), and Ken Fowkes (Small Creatures) will discuss their fascination with – and techniques for – photographing nature.
Richard will discuss his approach to bird and animal photography, what he hopes to achieve with his images, the history of the equipment that he uses and the advantage of workshops and bird setups. In addition, he will discuss how he approaches static and dynamic subjects and illustrate this information with how he processes an image.
Deborah will discuss flora photography. She will describe her initiation in wild flower photography. Deborah's presentation will have two sections: Creating Flora Images and Processing Flora Images. In Creating Flora Images she will discuss: the importance of composition in flora photography, photographing flowers on a light box, and using ICM techniques to create impressionistic photos. She will explain how to differentiate your photos: by converting to monochrome, by creating double-exposures, and by embellishing images through lab color.
Ken will discuss his interest in depicting bugs and dried flora as characters using photography. Using examples, he will share some thoughts about the factors that help these non-human subjects tell a relatable story.
