Filoli Gardens, Macro & Focus Stacking, Lunch & Champagne Social

Published on 6/24/2017

On 24 June, 2017 the club had a field trip to Filoli Gardens organized by Richard Mirabella.  Details below.

Description

Filoli Gardens has one of the most astounding gardens in the country and the second half of June is a peak flower time at Filoli. These gardens rival the gardens of European palaces and bring to mind Jay Gatsby's estate from F. Scott Fitzgerald novel The Great Gatsby.  The Filoli website is here http://www.filoli.org

What we will be doing there:

10:00 am to 10:15am Meet in Filoli's Parking Lot next to the picnic tables and form small groups.
10:15 am to 10:45am  Instruction and demo in macro photography and focus stacking for those who are interested. Other photograph the gardens or mansion.
12:00 noon Lunch in reserved area near the Cafe at Filoli resturant see sample menu .  Food and drink must be purchased at the cafe to use these tables.  For those who prefer to bring their own food and drink, the picnic table adjacent to the parking lot can be used.
1:00 pm Photography in the gardens or the mansion
3:30 pm Chanpaigne Social at the picnic tables (we are bringing our own drinks and snacks from Costco)

About Focus Stacking

Focus stacking (also known as focal plane merging and z-stacking or focus blending) is a digital image processing technique which combines multiple images taken at different focus distances to give a resulting image with a greater depth of field (DOF) than any of the individual source images.  This is an important technique in macro photography as this gives far greater control to get a much deeper depth of field when lenses only have very narrow depths of field.  This technique is also helpful more broadly beyond macro photography when you want greater control depth of field than your lens allows.
